THE LAST AIRBENDER bends into 3D

From ComingSoon.net:

"Paramount has decided [to 3D-convert] M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, except that they have no plans to move it off its July 2 release date.

According to Variety, Paramount has been working for over a year testing the 3D conversion process with Stereo D, who also worked on Avatar, and three months ago, they showed Shyamalan some converted footage and he agreed to convert the full movie to 3D.

On a recent visit to Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), ComingSoon.net/SuperHeroHype asked the movie's visual FX supervisor Pablo Hellman (War of the Worlds) about the 3D conversion process and whether in theory, it would be possible to convert The Last Airbender, and we received an answer that applies well to the recent news:

'You can probably spend as much time as you have,' he told us. 'How good it looks is proportionate to how much time that you spend either if you decide to shoot it in 3D or you decide to do it in post. I think the one thing that you have to remember is to design things (for 3D). If you have not designed it in 3D, you have to have a specific aesthetic to it, and having seen Clash of the Titans, this movie is different in the sense that Night's takes are really, really long. The average shot is about 500 frames, which is really long, and the camera movement, even in action scenes, there's a lot of stuff we shot at 96 frames a second just so we can speed it up or slow it down. The camera moves really slowly around the characters. That kind of design lends itself well to 3D dimensionalizing more than an action sequence that's all cuts; you just can't focus on things. A lot of it has to do with design and what you do with it, too. It's what we do with the tool that makes it either interesting or jarring and not telling the story.'"

Gene Simmons is THE WOLFMAN?

From IMDB.com:

"Gene Simmons is fulfilling a childhood dream, by providing the voice for the Wolfman in Sir Anthony Hopkins and Benicio Del Toro's new movie.

Simmons was asked by The Wolfman director Joe Johnston to record the creature's 'howling voice' for the movie, scheduled for release next year.

The invitation was a dream come true for the Kiss rocker and film fanatic.

Simmons explains, 'The original Wolfman starred Lon Chaney Jr., son of the legendary Lon Chaney Sr. Chaney Sr. was called Man Of 1,000 Faces, and for me was a pivotal figure in my childhood. So much so, that I wrote a song called Man of 1,000 Faces on my 1978 solo album, and my production company was also called Man of 1,000 Faces… in homage to Chaney.'

The rocker's trademark tones are currently in demand in Tinseltown - he's already landed another voice-over job. The bassist adds, 'I was asked to do the voice of the Dragon Spirit in M. Night Shyamalan’s forthcoming Airbender movie. This may or may not come to fruition. We’ll see.'"

Talk about coming out of left field!! I mean, I buy it, though it's just weird.

More Join THE LAST AIRBENDER

Aasif Mandvi, Shaun Toub and Cliff Curtis have joined the cast of M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender for Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. Shyamalan, Sam Mercer and Frank Marshall are producing with principal photography to begin mid-March 2009.

They join a cast headed by Noah Ringer, who plays the title role, Nicola Peltz, who plays the Waterbender Katara, Jackson Rathbone, in the role of Katara's brother Sokka, and Dev Patel, who plays Prince Zuko, prince of the Fire Nation.

Mandvi is set to play the role of Commander Zhao, an ambitious and hot-tempered Fire Nation commander. A regular correspondent on Comedy Central's hit show, 'The Daily Show,' Mandvi is repped by Endeavor and Lillian LaSalle at Sweet 180 Management. He will next be seen opposite Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in Disney's The Proposal, and recently wrapped production on 7 to the Palace, his feature co-writing debut in which he also stars.

Toub, last seen in Iron Man and The Kite Runner, is cast as Uncle Iroh, the retired Fire Nation general and devoted surrogate parent to Dev Patel's character Zuko. He is represented by Abrams Artists Agency.

Curtis is set to play the ruthless ruler Fire Lord Ozai. Represented by Abrams Artists Agency, he most recently appeared in Crossing Over with Harrison Ford and will next appear in the Paramount film A Thousand Words with Eddie Murphy.

In addition, Keong Sim has been cast in the role of Earthbending Father. He is represented by Judy Boals in New York.

Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war-torn world.

Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film The Last Airbender is the opening chapter in Aang's struggle to survive."

Well, at least Jesse McCartney's not playing Zuko like originally thought. But tell me, can you hear it now?

"Water... Earth... Fire... Air. Long ago, the 4 nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all 4 elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he still has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world." - Opening to "Avatar: The Last Airbender"
