JOHN CARTER OF MARS sets off into production.

From ComingSoon.net:

"Walt Disney Pictures announced today that principal photography is underway in London for John Carter of Mars. Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton brings this captivating hero to the big screen in a stunning adventure epic set on the wounded planet of Mars, a world inhabited by warrior tribes and exotic desert beings. Based on the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'Barsoom Series', the film chronicles the journey of Civil-War veteran John Carter, who finds himself battling a new and mysterious war amidst a host of strange Martian inhabitants.

Produced for Walt Disney Pictures by Jim Morris (WALL•E, Ratatouille) and Colin Wilson (Avatar, War of the Worlds), the live action/animation film marks Academy Award®-winning director/writer Andrew Stanton's (Finding Nemo, WALL•E) first foray into live action. Stanton directed and co-wrote the screenplay for Disney•Pixar's WALL•E, which earned the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature (2008); Stanton was nominated for an Oscar for the screenplay. He made his directorial debut with Disney•Pixar's Finding Nemo, garnering an Academy Award-nomination for Best Original Screenplay and winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (2003). He has worked as a screenwriter and/or executive producer on Disney•Pixar's Toy Story, A Bug's Life (which he also co-directed), Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Ratatouille and Up.

'I have been waiting my whole life to see the characters and worlds of John Carter of Mars realized on the big screen,' says Stanton. 'It is just a wonderful bonus that I have anything to do with it.'

The ensemble cast is led by Taylor Kitsch (NBC'S 'Friday Night Lights', X-Men Origins: Wolverine) in the title role, Lynn Collins (50 First Dates, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) as the warrior princess Dejah Thoris and Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, Shadow of the Vampire) as Martian inhabitant Tars Tarkas. The cast also includes Thomas Haden Church (Sideways, Spider-Man 3), Polly Walker (upcoming Clash of the Titans, Patriot Games), Samantha Morton (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, In America), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, Body of Lies), Ciaran Hinds (Munich, There Will Be Blood), British actor Dominic West (300, Chicago), James Purefoy (Vanity Fair, Resident Evil) and Bryan Cranston ('Breaking Bad'). Daryl Sabara (Disney's A Christmas Carol, Spy Kids films) takes the role of John Carter's teenaged nephew, Edgar Rice Burroughs.

The creative team includes Oscar-nominated production designer Nathan Crowley (Public Enemies, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins), costume designer Mayes Rubeo (Avatar, Apocalypto), cinematographer Daniel Mindel (Star Trek, Mission: Impossible III, Spy Game) and video effects supervisor Peter Chiang (The Reader, The Bourne Ultimatum)."

Mark Strong joins JOHN CARTER OF MARS

From ComingSoon.net:

"Cinema Blend got on the phone today with actor Mark Strong (upcoming Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood) and was able to learn more about his character in Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars.

It was previously announced that Strong would play Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems with godlike status.

'There's some filming in Utah, but most of it is in a studio outside of London,' Strong said. My character doesn't actually get involved in any of the motion-capture stuff. All the stuff is live action. Although I can shift my shape, so I have to be photographed by a 360-degree camera. I can adapt into anything. That's going to be my particular talent.'

The site asked what he can transform into, and Strong said that it's mostly other human beings.

Scheduled for a summer 2012 release, the adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'A Princess of Mars' stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Polly Walker, Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy and Strong."

Three more join JOHN CARTER OF MARS

From ComingsSoon.net:

"James Purefoy [(TV's 'The Philantropist')] and Mark Strong [(upcoming Sherlock Holmes)] have joined the cast of John Carter of Mars, Disney's adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs books that Andrew Stanton is directing.

Thomas Haden Church [(Spider-Man 3)] said earlier this summer that he was probably on board, and that's confirmed now as well.

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins topline the film, which centers on a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where he becomes embroiled with the planet's warring people.

Church plays Tal Hajus, an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler.

Purefoy plays Kantos Kan, the captain of the Xavarian, the kingdom of Helium’s grand warship. Strong is Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems with godlike status.

Also in the movie are Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, and Polly Walker.

Disney is planning a Summer 2012 release for the film."

Cool. Can't wait to see first look pictures.

Updates on JOHN CARTER OF MARS

From MTV Movie Blog:

"In an exclusive interview with MTV News, WALL-E writer/director Andrew Stanton dished the most details yet about the progress of his next feature, John Carter of Mars, an adaptation of a nearly hundred-year-old serialized novel about a Civil War vet mysteriously transported to the Red Planet, where he encounters all manner of alien adventures.

'It’s real,' Stanton assured us. 'We’re full bore on it right now. We’re over the hump of the writing phase, and we’re certainly far from rewrites.' Before he could even get to that point, Stanton had to solve a problem that had stymied filmmakers for eighty years: How do you turn the six separate installments of the novel into a coherent whole? 'I don’t want to be dissing it,' he said, 'but it almost had an absence of a story for a feature film because it was very episodic. In its day it was a comic book. I mean, this book was written in 1912. It was the comic book you got in the time before there was such thing as comic books. So, it was really just about the next fight, the next adventure, the next romance.'

'The key was putting a story into it and creating characters that had to grow and real basic stuff that we all know a movie needs,' he explained. Messing with a classic of the fantasy genre is always risky, but Stanton believes the passage of time is on his side. 'Fortunately it’s an old enough story,' he said. 'There isn’t such huge allegiance to it that people won’t mind that we muck with it a bit to hopefully amplify the essence of what made me interested in it as a young kid and hopefully will keep me interested in it as an .' Another vital realization, Stanton told us, was that John Carter of Mars could not be a strictly computer animated feature like past creations Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc.

'There’s so much in it that can’t be real,' he said. 'It’s the perfect definition of a hybrid movie,' utilizing both live actors and computer-based animation [as he did on WALL-E, a first for Pixar]."

Also from MTV Movie Blog:

"From the sound of things, Disney's adaptation of the nearly hundred-year-old sci-fi series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, John Carter of Mars, is going to start as early as January of next year. The start had previously been pushed back from November. Pre-production continues to move steadily forward nonetheless on the hybrid live action/CGI film.

As co-star Lynn Collins told MTV's Josh Horowitz last week on the New York red carpet for The Burning Plain, she's already seen workups of fight sequences she'll have to film and, last week, some initial effects work kicked into gear. 'We're actually getting into some hair and makeup tests this week to see what the look is like,' said Collins, who plays the humanoid Martian princess Dejah Thoris. 'It's really collaborative and really creative and I'm really excited about it.'

The preliminary idea is not to bury Collins under prosthetics and heavy-duty makeup but to create a look that would not be out of place on a tropical island. 'I think they're going more like a really great tan, like the best-tan-you-can-ever-imagine type of thing,' she said. 'I've yet to find it. Maybe the makeup team will be able to.' There's no word yet how the rest of the cast will end up looking. Joining Collins in John Carter is her X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-star Taylor Kitsch as the title character, a Civil War vet inexplicably transported to the Red Planet, where he stumbles upon all manner of alien adventures.

'Taylor is so amazing,' Collins said. 'We went to Pixar and saw some of the workups of some of the fighting that we have to do. I was like, 'Oh my god, there's just no guy better for the job. He's so athletic and wonderful and such a great actor and so positive.'"

Calling her character 'a priestess of science and letters,' Collins extolled co-writer/director Andrew Stanton's (WALL-E, Finding Nemo) vision for John Carter. 'Edgar Rice Burroughs was a really smart writer, so smart that some of the stuff I can hardly wrap my head around, so that's up to Pixar to see if they can put in visually to life,' the actress said, adding, 'It's completely satirical and politically on point, I'd say.'"

I thought the movie was all Disney. Apparently not, now that Pixar is on the list.

Other D23 Expo Info

From ComingSoon.net:

"Among a bevy of surprise guests at today's D23 Expo presentation, Tim Burton offered attendees a look at the 3D teaser for Alice in Wonderland (the same version currently available online) and confirmed that he'll be following it up with Frankenweenie, a full stop-motion adaptation of his original live-action short film that tells the story of a dog brought back to life by a mad scientist kid. Also confirmed was a 2011 release date."

"Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook officially named Summer 2012 as the release date for Pixar's John Carter of Mars, claiming that the film will, indeed, be live-action with intense special effects.

Following the announcement, Johnny Depp appeared in full Jack Sparrow costume, taking the stage and announcing a Summer 2011 release date for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the new title for the fourth installment!

Speculation has already begun that the subtitle On Stranger Tides refers to author Tim Powers' novel with the same name. The following is the official description of the book:

'Puppeteer John Chandagnac, who was sailing to Jamaica to get revenge on the uncle who had stolen his father's inheritance, has no choice but to join the buccaneers who have taken him prisoner--and soon, known now as the pirate Jack Shandy, he finds himself learning to survive in a treacherous new world of cutlass-fights, sea-battles, and voodoo magic on sun-blinded tropical islands. The legendary Blackbeard is assembling a ruthless navy of pirates living and undead to voyage to the fabled Fountain of Youth, and Jack Shandy must use magic, swordsmanship, and even his puppeteer skills to free himself and the girl he has fallen in love with from Blackbeard's deadly supernatural domination.'

At the end of the third Pirates movie, it is shown that both Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) are next eyeing the Fountain of Youth. Barbossa has 'stolen' the Black Pearl back from Sparrow, but Sparrow has cut out the most important part of Barbossa's map to the Fountain of Youth.

If they will be adapting the book, will Sparrow and Barbossa have to team up again against Blackbeard? We'll have to wait and see how it will turn out."

"Roaring applause from Disney fans filled the Anaheim Convention Center Arena as the Muppets took the stage, performing a song and dance number live on-stage. At the conclusion of the performance, Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook officially announced that the upcoming Muppet film (written by Jason Segel) will be titled The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made.

This title references an old title, developed Jim Henson in 1985 but never produced that would have featured Gonzo directing a Hollywood film and quickly blowing the project's budget. Though unconfirmed, it is likely that this new film will mirror the same storyline."

All interesting happenings! Can't wait for new developments!!

Morton, West and Walker sign on to MARS

From ComingSoon.net:

"Samantha Morton, Dominic West and Polly Walker have joined Disney's John Carter of Mars, director Andrew Stanton's adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series.

The trio joins Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins and Willem Dafoe in the film, which centers on a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where he discovers a lush, wildly diverse planet whose main inhabitants are 12-foot tall green barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter Dejah Thoris (Collins), Princess of Helium, who is in desperate need of a savior and Tars Tarkas (Dafoe), a brutal and mirthless green Martian warrior, who possesses the unusual characteristic to feel love and empathy..

Morton plays Sola, the daughter of Dafoe's Tars Tarkas, who must hide her softer side from her warmongering race.

West plays Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans who believes he is entitled to rule Mars.

Walker plays Sarkoja, a merciless, tyrannical Thark."

Okay, let me see if I can see where these unknowns (at least to me come from) - Morton was in Steven Spielberg's Minority Report as Agatha, West was in Zach Snyder's 300 as Theron and in George Lucas' Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace as a palace guard (well, you gotta start somewhere) and Polly Walker was in Patriot Games.

Willem Dafoe stays green for JOHN CARTER

From ComingSoon.net:

"Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) is set to star opposite Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins in Walt Disney Pictures' fantasy epic John Carter of Mars, to be directed by WALL•E and Finding Nemo helmer Andrew Stanton.

Variety says Dafoe will play the role of Tars Tarkas, a fierce green Martian warrior, who's unusual among his savage race for his ability to love. Tars develops an alliance with John Carter in the first film, which is based on 'A Princess of Mars'.

He fights battles alongside Carter through the entire series of Edgar Rice Burroughs books, so he will be hanging around for sequels.

Stanton wrote the script with Mark Andrews."

Isn't it interesting that Willem Dafoe is playing a green character and he's not a villian this time? (Green Goblin, anyone?). And that this is the second time that he is not playing a villain in an Andrew Stanton film (Gil in Finding Nemo, anyone?)

From X-Men to Mars?

From ComingSoon.net:

"Walt Disney Pictures has announced that Wolverine stars Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins will reteam for John Carter of Mars, the live-action debut of WALL•E and Finding Nemo director Andrew Stanton.

Kitsch will play the title character, a damaged Civil War veteran who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars where his involvements with warring raced of the dying planet force him to rediscover his humanity. Collins will play Dejah Thoris, the heir to the throne of Mars' Helium kingdom.

The screenplay for the sci-fi action-adventure, based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs classic series of fantasy/sci-fi novels, was written by Stanton and Mark Andrews with a polish by Michael Chabon. Jim Morris (WALL•E) and Colin Wilson (upcoming Avatar, Munich, War of the Worlds) are producing the film, which will start production early next year."

More info:

"It will be the first live-action movie directed [Andrew Stanton], as well as the first live-action movie produced in conjunction with Pixar Animation.... Disney•Pixar is scheduled to start the film in November and will shoot in Utah for 45 days. Disney and Pixar, makers of classic animated movies such as Toy Story and the recent hit Up, are expected to partly film the pulp science-fiction adventure John Carter of Mars in Utah from November to July 2010. Portions of the Beehive State will double as Mars, including Lake Powell (where the original Planet of the Apes was partially filmed), Moab, and Kane and Wayne counties. In exchange for filming here, the production will receive a tax credit through the state's film incentive program. On Thursday, the Governor's Office of Economic Development board approved an application for the credit submitted by the movie's production company. 'It's the biggest movie we've ever used incentives on,' said Utah Film Commission executive director Marshall Moore. 'We haven't seen these kinds of numbers since doing a TV series for a year.' The San Rafael Swell already doubled as the planet Vulcan in this year's summer blockbuster Star Trek, but second-unit crews only shot for four days in Utah."

Well, I admit (sadly) that I haven't seen X-Men Origins: Wolverine but maybe Andrew Stanton is further along in production of John Carter than previously thought. I thought Carter was meant to be an old man.

UPDATE:

Yeah, I finally did my research and it turns out that John Carter is a Civil War veteran but that does not necessarily make him old. My bad, my bad.
