From ComingSoon.net:
"IMAX Corporation announced today that Universal Pictures' Fast Five will be released to digital IMAX theatres simultaneously with the action-thriller's wide release on June 10, 2011. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker lead a reunion of all-stars from every chapter of the Fast and Furious franchise, along with some new cast including Dwayne Johnson, in the film directed by Justin Lin.
Universal's partnership with IMAX on Fast Five marks the studio's return to the IMAX fold. The Academy Award-winning Apollo 13, in 2002 was the first Universal film to utilize the IMAX DMR technology.
'Fast Five' is a perfect film for IMAX,' said Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson. 'The film's incredible action sequences combined with IMAX's unmatched quality that allows the action to jump off the screen will provide filmgoers with an optimal theatrical experience.'
In Fast Five, former cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) partners with ex-con Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) on the opposite side of the law. Dwayne Johnson joins returning favorites Jordana Brewster, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon and Don Omar for this ultimate high-stakes race.
Since Brian and Mia Toretto (Brewster) broke Dom out of custody, they've blown across many borders to elude authorities. Now backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But he's not the only one on their tail.
Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can't separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey...before someone else runs them down first."

THE GREEN HORNET wings onto IMAX 3D
From ComingSoon.net:
"IMAX and Sony Pictures announced today that The Green Hornet will also be released in IMAX 3D. The full announcement:
IMAX Corporation and Sony Pictures Releasing announced today that The Green Hornet, the highly anticipated adaptation of the radio and television masked superhero character will be released to IMAX theatres, simultaneously with the film's wide domestic 2D and 3D release on January 14, 2011. The film will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience and presented in IMAX 3D.
'We are tremendously excited that The Green Hornet will be released in IMAX 3D as part of our wide release of the film,' said Rory Bruer, President, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Releasing. 'When you have a film that has such an imaginative and unique depth, scope, and visual style, you really should experience the film with the outstanding 3D elements that the filmmakers are delivering. We believe The IMAX 3D Experience will offer audiences a truly state of the art cinematic experience.'
'Superhero movies typically play very well with IMAX audiences, making the release of The Green Hornet a great way to kick off our 2011 slate,' said IMAX Chief Executive Officer Richard L. Gelfond. 'We're pleased with the continued expansion of our relationship with Sony Pictures, and we're excited to work with them to reach our growing audience base with another quality film.'
'We're excited to welcome Michel Gondry to the list of acclaimed directors who have released films into the IMAX network and we believe his innovative creative vision will play very well in IMAX,' added Greg Foster, Chairman and President, Filmed Entertainment. 'This film is ideally suited to our fanboy audience, and in IMAX 3D, they will be transported into the world of The Green Hornet.'
In the film, Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), son and heir to Los Angeles' largest newspaper fortune, is a rich, spoiled playboy who has been happy to maintain a direction-less existence. When his father James Reid (Tom Wilkinson) mysteriously dies, Britt meets an impressive and resourceful company employee, Kato (Jay Chou). They realize that they have the resources to do something worthwhile with their lives and finally step out of James Reid's shadow. Kato builds the ultimate weapon, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with every weapon and gadget imaginable and Britt decides that in order to be heroes, they will pose as villains. With the help of Britt's new secretary, Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), they learn that the chief criminal in the city is named Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). He has united all the gangs under his power, and he quickly sees that the Green Hornet is a direct threat to the prosperous criminal underworld he controls. Directed by Michel Gondry. The screenplay is by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, based upon 'The Green Hornet' radio series created by George W. Trendle. The film is produced by Neal H. Moritz."

IMAX and Warner Bros. unite
From ComingSoon.net:
"IMAX and Warner Bros. Pictures announced a deal today good for up to 20 movies from 2010 through 2013:
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures, a unit of Time Warner Inc., announced today that they have completed an agreement to release up to 20 Warner Bros. films in IMAX's format over the course of the next three and a half years (from 2010 through 2013). The agreement strategically aligns Warner Bros.' tent-pole business with the increasing worldwide popularity of The IMAX Experience in both 2D and IMAX 3D, providing the studio with an added distribution platform that consistently delivers strong box office returns. The agreement underscores the excitement around the studio's future films which are anticipated to be among the best Hollywood event titles slated for release in the coming years.
Under the agreement, Warner Bros. movies that will be released in IMAX are: Legends of the Guardian: The Owls of Ga'Hoole 3D (September 24, 2010); Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (3D) (November 19, 2010); Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II (3D) (July 15, 2011); Happy Feet 2 (3D) (November 18, 2011); and The Hobbit (December 2012). Warner Bros. and IMAX also plan to release an additional 15 films over the course of 2011, 2012 and 2013, including Gravity, Dark Shadows, [the non-Mel Gibson Mad Max movie] Fury Road, Batman 3, and [the next] Superman [film]."

TRON LEGACY breaks new ground on IMAX
From ComingSoon.net:
"After the event in Los Angeles, /Film founder Peter Sciretta and FirstShowing's Alex Billington spoke to director Joseph Kosinski about the footage [from Tron Legacy] they saw and discovered he had shot five action sequences that will be displayed in the full-range IMAX format (similar to The Dark Knight) so that those who catch it on the larger IMAX screens will be able to view those scenes taking full advantage of the extended format. (Normally, IMAX show their films in a larger letter-boxed format.)"
The event was about the new Tron Legacy trailer premiere. I will not post what was said until the film trailer is finally released, sometime HOPEFULLY before the release of Alice in Wonderland. Here's the original article from Tron Legacy:
"Kosinski revealed to me that five action sequences from Tron Legacy will be shown in 1.7:1 aspect ratio, exclusively in IMAX Theatres.
If you’ve ever seen a theatrical 3D film on the IMAX screen, then you know that the movie doesn’t fill the whole screen, leaving huge bars to the top and bottom. With The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan shot a few sequences and establishing shots with IMAX cameras, allowing the screen image to switch aspect ratios and fill the entire huge IMAX screen. If you pay to see Tron Legacy in IMAX, you will see something similar.
Most of the film will be presented in widescreen, 2.35:1 aspect ratio, like it will be in your normal multiplex screen. But in the IMAX presentation, five special action sequences are being rendered at 1.7:1, which means that you will see a lot more on the top and the bottom. This makes a huge difference for a 3D presentation. As you know, an IMAX screen is up to eight stories high and are designed to extend to the edge of your peripheral vision, creating a more immersive experience.
I was also told that Disney would be releasing a special IMAX trailer online to show moviegoers the difference. Tron Legacy hits theaters on December 17th 2010.
SlashUpdate: Some people have been asking me this question, so maybe I wasn’t clear about it in my initial post. The IMAX presentation will not be zoomed in or cropped. Kosinski was very clear to me in saying that IMAX moviegoers would see more of the movie at the top and bottom of the frame. No, the movie was not shot on IMAX cameras — it was shot using Sony CineAlta Fusion 3D cameras. I know that camera has a native 16:9 frame, which is close to the 1.7:1 frame of the IMAX presentation. So its very possible that the extra hieght was captured in camera during the shoot, and cropped out for the theatrical presentation. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was shot on that camera series in 16:9 and cropped to 2.35:1 for the release. But the bottom line is: It's not zoomed in or cropped, you will see more in the IMAX release."

TRON LEGACY rides into 3D
From ComingSoon.net:
"Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and IMAX Corporation today announced that Tron Legacy, the intense, high-tech 3D adventure starring Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, will be released to IMAX theatres in IMAX 3D simultaneously with the film's wide release on December 17, 2010. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Tron Legacy will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with IMAX DMR (Digital Re-Mastering) technology. Tron Legacy is the third film of the previously announced five-picture agreement between IMAX and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
'This is an ideal movie for IMAX's immersive format,' said Mark Zoradi, president, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group. 'Tron Legacy already packs a punch in Disney Digital 3D, and to give audiences the option to experience the enhanced premium IMAX 3D version is a real treat. We're particularly excited to reach a much wider audience now that the IMAX network is expanding with its digital locations.'
'2010 is shaping up to be a powerful year for IMAX 3D releases, and Disney's Tron Legacy is a great addition,' said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. 'We believe the buzz that already surrounds this film, combined with its fan-boy following and high-tech visual effects makes it a perfect fit for IMAX and we look forward to its release next year.'
'We share a common goal with our partners at Disney, which is to transport people to places they normally can't go, and the world of Tron is certainly one of those cool places,' added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. 'Since I saw the first glimpse of Tron Legacy in 3D over a year ago, I've felt it was the perfect match for the The IMAX Experience.'
Tron Legacy is set in a digital world that's unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin's loyal confidant Quorra (Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey of escape across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous. The 3D adventure is directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Sean Baily, Jeffrey Silver, Steven Lisberger and written by Lisberger, Richard Jeffries, Brian Klugman & Lee Stemthal, Eddy Kitsis & Adam Horowitz, and Bill Wheeler."
This isn't really new news because they announced it in the VFX Concept Test.
What is newsworthy is now we know the name of the character of Olivia Wilde - Quorra. Interesting, but not near as enduring as 'Yori'.

From ComingSoon.net:
"IMAX Corporation and Columbia Pictures today announced that the highly-anticipated action-adventure Spider-Man 4, will be released to IMAX(R) theatres simultaneously with the film's worldwide release on May 5, 2011. The fourth installment of the successful Spider-Man franchise, based on the Marvel Comicbook character, will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience. The film will be distributed by Columbia Pictures domestically and by Sony Pictures Releasing International overseas.
To date, the Spider-Man motion pictures have generated more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office receipts.
'The last two Spider-Man releases have been available in IMAX theaters, and we're very much looking forward to our return to a wider IMAX theatre network with this exciting new chapter in the continuing adventures of Spider-Man,' said Rory Bruer, President, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Releasing. 'The addition of so many new IMAX locations will give even more fans of Spider-Man an opportunity to experience the action and adventure in a unique way.'
'Spider-Man continues to be one of the world's most popular motion picture franchises, and we are very excited to include the latest chapter as part of our 2011 slate,' said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. 'Our network has grown significantly and we continue to roll-out new theatres virtually every week, giving more moviegoers the opportunity to experience the movie in IMAX.'
'We're so excited to once again work with our friends at Columbia Pictures, Sony and Marvel to bring this beloved superhero back to IMAX theatres,' said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. 'The Spider-Man franchise has been so important to the growth of our network and fan base over the years and we're certainly looking forward to re-teaming with the entire cast and production team to bring this next chapter to moviegoers worldwide.'
Spider-Man 4 will reunite director Sam Raimi with stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. The screenplay is currently being adapted by Gary Ross. Producers are Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, Todd Black and Grant Curtis. Executive producers are Stan Lee, Todd Hallowell and Josh Donen.
The IMAX release will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR(R) (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie."
Cool!! Although I need to find a better IMAX theatre than the "educational" Pink Palace one in Memphis. The closest ones are in Chattanooga and Knoxville. I'm probably gonna pick Knoxville for next year in college for I'm seeing this one and Tron Legacy.

The trouble with IMAX?
From IMDB.com:
"IMAX officials maintained... that they have been installing smaller screens in multiplexes for the past six years without controversy and that the screens are installed in such a way -- closer to the audience -- that they give the perception of larger size. The controversy over IMAX's new screen size was kicked up recently by 'Parks and Recreation' actor Aziz Ansari, who said that he felt he had been ripped off when he paid a premium price to see Star Trek on an IMAX screen only to discover that the screen was only slightly larger than those in conventional theaters."
From Slashfilm:
"Actor/comedian Aziz Ansari started the public fuss, Pulitzer Prize winning movie critic Roger Ebert publicly came out against the practice, yet IMAX ignorantly ignored the critisism, and insists that audiences are too stupid to notice the difference. Now big Hollywood players are beginning to step up and take a stance on the issue.
Producer Frank Marshall agrees that IMAX Digital is false advertising. For those who might not recognize the name, Marshall has produced over 80 films over the last 30 years, including the Indiana Jones series, Poltergeist, Gremlins, Goonies, Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Sixth Sense, The Bourne films, Signs, Seabicuit, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and more. basically, he’s one of the biggest producers in Hollywood. So what did Marshall say about IMAX?
Marshall tweeted: '...I stopped into the much hyped IMAX theater at the AMC on 42nd st. NYC. I was stunned…' … 'there is nothing remotely resembling an IMAX screen or presentation, don’t spend your money for this.' … 'I can’t believe they can get away with this. It’s really false advertising…'"
IMAX had better shape up if this is the truth.
