Comic-Con: THE AVENGERS assembled!!

"It was a pretty poorly kept secret that Marvel planned to formally announce The Avengers today during the Marvel Studios panel in Hall H at the San Diego Comic Con, but that didn’t stop thousands of people going into geek rapture when the full cast walked out on stage.

After the Thor panel concluded, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige dimmed the lights one last time, and an Avengers ‘A’ logo slowly resolved on screen as the voice of Nick Fury (Sam Jackson) explained the formation of the world’s biggest superhero team. And then Jackson himself came on stage to introduce the cast.

Jackson introduced the cast we know, all of whom strode out on stage. We’d just seen Clark Gregg (SHIELD Agent Coulson [from the Iron Man films and the upcoming Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) on other panels, but the appearances of Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) were surprises.


Then Downey took the mic, and before he got down to business he took a moment to comment on the wild ambition of Inception before proclaiming the idea of bringing together the leads of all of Marvel’s superhero films for The Avengers to be the most wildly ambitious movie idea yet hatched.

Then he introduced Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, aka The Hulk.

Then Joss Whedon came out, grinning like a madman. 'I’ve had a dream all my life,' he exclaimed, 'and it was not this good!' (Then, in typically self-depricating style, he jokingly added 'and I am going to blow it.')"

Hugo Weaving IS the Red Skull

"Marvel Studios announced today that Hugo Weaving has been cast to star as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull in the studio's highly anticipated movie Captain America: The First Avenger opposite Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell. In the early comics, Johann Schmidt was drafted into loyal service of The Third Reich and renamed 'The Red Skull'. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce Captain America: The First Avenger. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D'Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Captain America: The First Avenger will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Weaving was last seen in The Wolfman and his voice is very recognizable as Megatron from Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as well as Noah the Elder from Happy Feet. His other film credits include starring in V For Vendetta, The Matrix franchise, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy."

About time, Marvel.

Chris Evans talks CAPTAIN AMERICA

"At a WonderCon press roundtable for Sylvain White's The Losers, the elephant in the room was addressed and Chris Evans was asked why he wanted to play the role of Steve Rogers in Marvel's The First Avenger: Captain America. After all, Evans already has played another iconic Marvel comic character when he took on the role of Johnny Storm a.k.a The Human Torch in two Fantastic Four movies and besides his role in the comic-based Losers, he's also playing action star Lucas Lee in Edgar Wright's upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

At first, Evans was slightly hesitant at answering, knowing full well the question was coming, as would be expected when you're at a comic convention with lots of press interested in genre fare. After a bit of stammering, he finally said what interested him in playing another comic book role:

'I think Marvel is doing a lot of good things right now, and it's a fun character. Even if it wasn't a comic book. I think the story of Steve Rogers is great. He's a great guy. Even if it was just a script about anybody, I would probably want to do it. So it wasn't necessarily about the comic itself. He's a great character. He's a great character to play. He just happens to be a comic book character.'

He was then ribbed by Zoe Saldana, his co-star in The Losers, to add that it was all about being able to get back into blue tights, which he wore a lot as Johnny Storm."

Oh, you've done blue characters too, Zoe. Avatar ring a bell?

MTV News caught up with the actor, who also plays Jensen in director Sylvain White's upcoming adaptation of the action [graphic novel] series The Losers, during this weekend's WonderCon to find out if he's intimidated by the prospect of giving orders to Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. when it comes time for The Avengers.

'I don't know if they're going to make him the boss,' Evans said of Cap's role in The Avengers. 'His character... He's a good guy,' he added.

Presented with the notion of his character leading Marvel's team of superheroes that includes Iron Man and Thor (among others), Evans seemed a bit uncertain that Cap will be the boss when Earth's Mightiest Heroes take the screen.

'Does he [run the show]?' asked Evans. 'I don't think anybody tells Downey what to do, and that's what makes [him] Downey.'

Finally, Evans added that he hasn't tried on the costume or shield yet, but he's looking forward to donning Cap's red, white and blue uniform."

As great a guy as I know Chris will be as Cap, only Samuel L. Jackson can be the leader of the Avengers.

From Human Torch to CAPTAIN AMERICA?

"THR is reporting that Marvel Studios has offered The First Avenger: Captain America to Chris Evans, who played Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies.

Marvel Studios would not confirm the development... saying they don't comment on rumors.

The Hollywood trade says the offer would include starring in up to three Captain America movies plus The Avengers and appearances in several other Marvel movies.

Evans does have a scheduling conflict, however. He is committed to co-starring in the Anna Faris romantic comedy What's Your Number?. Both are scheduled to shoot this summer.

Joe Johnston will direct The First Avenger: Captain America in England for a July 22, 2011 release."

As much as I love Chris Evans doing comedy (come to think of it, I haven't seen Chris do any comedy movies - I've seen him in the Fantastic Four movies and Cellular; both films show him being funny and serious) but he would be the PERFECT Captain America!! I'm usually very good at predicting these sort of things (*cough* Ryan Reynolds *cough* Green Lantern *cough), so let's hope I'm right in saying Chris Evans is Captain America.

"Chris Evans will play Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America.

Sources tell us the actor has not only accepted Marvel's offer, first detailed on Friday, but that the dealmaking moved so fast it's now all about dotting the i's and crossing the t's.

Marvel would not comment on the development, and CAA, which reps the actor, declined comment.

Evans was offered the role in Marvel Studios' production last week, but there was some question of whether he would accept. Factoring in to the choice was the fact that Evans played Johnny Storm, the flame-covered superhero known as the Human Torch in Fox's Fantastic Four movies. Was he ready to play another superhero and take on the trappings that come with such a high-profile part?

Evans took a few days to think it over, and once he decided he was willing to wield the shield, negotiations moved quickly over the weekend."
